< Korea GFS Annual Report >
The Girls’ Friendly Society of Korean Anglican Church has been looking forward to a special day in its diary at which good friends of GFS all over the world will meet face-to-face with heart and joy. As the designated host of 19th GFS World Council, Korea GFS is willing to collaborate and participate into the coming 18th GFS World Council with creativity and deep friendship.
The report below is the summarized description of main projects and efforts of Korea GFS from 2003 until now (March 2005).
Korea GFS consists of 15 GFS branches over the country and the Preparation Committee for 18th GFS World Council in US was independently established within the organization of GFS association. The main projects of Korea GFS are as follows.
(1) Calling education for GFS member in church
(2) Culture & literature programs in sisterhood
(3) Expansion of GFS branches over the country
(4) Support for foreign women workers In Korea
(5) Operation of counseling center for women in crises
(6) Organization of Junior Camp
As a calling education for women in church, Korea GFS promotes women’s self-development and faith-based maturity through annual retreat, in which most of GFS members can have time to feel more deep connection with our Lord.
The literal or cultural educations have been organized by voluntary services of professional tutors, who are currently Korea GFS members. The most popular educational programs are foreign culture & life style, and reading bible in English.
The educational training for parents (P.E.T), especially, is aimed at re-awakening and recovering the precious worth of home and family life in this rapidly changing world. The program for parents makes people rehabilitate their real identity and revive the happy home life with God’s love and blessing. In consequence of such educational program, the cathedral in Daejeon-shi opened a counseling center for women in crises. The activity level of the center has been fairly intense with a good cause and passionate participation of all the folks involved.
The Junior Camp program (2~3 days) has been organized over 20 years. The purpose of Junior Camp program is to develop and to encourage the religious faith of juniors through social events. Previously, the Junior Camp program had been independently operated in Korea Anglican Communion, which meant that Korea GFS hadn’t have very young people as its members until the initiation ceremony for juniors in October, 2004.
Korea GFS’ another big activity is currently focused upon a mission program toward foreign women workers in Korea.
From 15 years ago on, there has been increasing influx of foreign workers into Korea, who are mainly from Bangladeshi, Philippines, and Korean people in China. Most of them are under illegal status in sojourning or in working in Korea now. The working conditions for them are also very poor and not given with proper return or benefit. The social issue derived from this situation has recently received some concern and community’s small voice, though not much social support yet.
As a frontier supporter for this social issue, the Namyangju Church, which is one of Korea Anglican Churches, opened a counseling center, Shalom’s House. The center has developed its persistent efforts for protection of rights of workers from foreign lands. Korea GFS has also joined in the center’s social morale boosting, with special emphasis on foreign women workers, their family lives and working lives as a kind of neighbor mission over past three years.
Aside from unfamiliar culture and language, and insecure living condition owing to illegal sojourn, the doubly painful thing for foreign women workers to experience is especially concerned with child-care matter. They need helps materially, emotionally, and educationally for their lovable children as well as themselves.
Korea GFS, therefore, visits the center and not a few houses, which are located far from Seoul Cathedral and other churches in another cities, every a week. Whenever Korea GFS members meet foreign friends, supports such as basic necessities, educations related to Korean things or Korean language and child-care, and how to access to public health services, are provided to them with voluntary basis.
Most of all, Korea GFS members do make efforts to be a good friend or a good ear for their trouble or various concerns. For all that those passionate heart and activities, Korea GFS realizes that there is still long way to go in this effort. To become a more effective and productive helper for them, there seems to need more systematical cooperation, more prayers and more attention from society in more large scale. From this realization on, Korea GFS determines to dedicate itself to the social cause with more heart and organizational cooperation.
Another successful and continuous achievement for Korea GFS to focus upon is expansion of GFS branches over the country. In 2002, the number of GFS branches showed only 11 branches, and poor environments those times brought about some concern and worries regarding GFS future. But that’s the definitely wrong impression.
With persistent and steel-like faith, the current number of GFS branches in active proceeding reaches 15 places as of 2004 and at last GFS has been acknowledged as a whole organization. The prospect for expansion of GFS looks more promising in the future.
In addition, Korea GFS willingly takes part in social mission programs such as sharing house, food bank, and support for monk communion, which are mainly organized by Seoul Cathedra Diocese, and each GFS branch doesn’t hesitate to participate into every event of its own church arranging.
A prayer: Korea GFS will do its best in attracting and hosting the next GFS World Council in 2008 and at the same time will need endless encouragement and prayer from friends all over the world in the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ.
